A crate engine is an original specced engine from the factory. The end use may not be for installation in the type of vehicle for which it is designed but it will produce a performance the same as a factory engine. A remanufactured engine is a previous factory engine that has been reconditioned to factory performance.

What to replace when installing a remanufactured engine? ›

A new thermostat is an absolute must, along with new coolant and a new water pump (if a water pump does not come with the engine). The new engine also deserves a new air and oil filter, new spark plugs and plug wires (if equipped).
