Liquid I.V. is an electrolyte drink mix brand that uses a proprietary system the company claims can send water and nutrients through the bloodstream faster than water alone.
After trying 15 Liquid I.V. sticks over a two-week period, I appreciated the unique taste of each flavor and how easy it was to finish each stick.
This product is easy to combine with water, and pushed me to drink more water as well, but the higher carbohydrate and sugar content was a deterrent.

How Liquid I.V. Works
Electrolytes are essential minerals—such as calcium, potassium and sodium—found in blood and other bodily fluids that play an important role in many key functions, including maintaining hydration levels, the acidity or pH of your blood, muscle functions and more. Electrolytes are lost through sweat and urine, and must be replaced. They are found in foods and fluids.
Liquid I.V. is an electrolyte drink mix that, according to the company, transfers water and key nutrients to the bloodstream quicker and more streamlined than water on its own.
One stick or packet of Liquid I.V. is equal to one serving, and by purchasing the Hydration Multiplier Variety Pack, consumers have the option to taste three flavors: Passion Fruit, Lemon Lime and Açaí Berry.
The company recommends healthy adults consume one stick per day, combining each stick with 16 ounces of cold water. While the product is best utilized before travel and exercise, the company claims Liquid I.V. products can also be beneficial for focus and concentration, hangover relief, energy boosts, anxiety or stress reduction and more.
To add a little something extra to your Liquid I.V. experience, the company suggests introducing foods like ginger, sliced cucumber, a squeeze of lemon or lime juice, mint and more.

What Experts Say
“I do like that the ingredients are naturally sourced and contain electrolytes close to their most simple form,” explains Lindsey Donovan, a registered dietitian nutritionist and pediatric clinical dietitian at Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. “While this product is not FDA-approved, they do claim to utilize ingredients that align with FDA compliance.”
Donovan states that she’d recommend Liquid I.V. as an alternative to similar products to her patients, however, she would not recommend the product for those with sedentary lifestyles or those who are sick, to prevent excessive sodium intake. “For kids, the only ingredient I would watch out for would be any of their products containing caffeine,” she says. “Due to limited research on adverse effects of caffeine in kids, it is advised to limit caffeine intake in those under age 12.”
Emily Paonessa, a registered dietitian, licensed dietitian nutritionist and clinical dietitian based in Raleigh, North Carolina adds that “this product is intended for rehydration following fluid losses from exposure to heat for an extended period of time, from GI disturbances (bouts of vomiting or diarrhea) and during strenuous exercise (high-intensity for an extended period—think athletes).”
Paonessa explains that for this purpose, she believes the inclusion of sugar and electrolytes is appropriate. “It’s lower in calories and sugar than some of its competitors,” she says. However, she advises that the amount of carbohydrates from sugar, potassium and sodium contents should be considered, as it could potentially be too high for those with certain medical conditions. She also recommends that those with food allergies should always check ingredient labels.
“For most people, water is sufficient for adequate hydration,” explains Paonessa. “This product, if used daily, could put someone over their added sugar and sodium needs. For a healthy individual, this should be taken into account and used in moderation, like anything.”

The Product Experience
I tried 15 Liquid I.V. products in the LIV Universe Sampler for just over a two-week period, not exceeding the consumption of more than one stick per day. As of publication, it appears the LIV Universe Sampler is no longer available on its website, but it does offer other variety packs and bundles.
Looking at the packaging and first-time buyer experience overall, I was disappointed upon opening my package, as one of the sticks had a hole in it, and some of the powder had leaked out. The sticks were also loosely placed in the box, with no directions or information card related to use, which I expected to come with a product like this.
My goal was to be consistent with using the product, but also to try the product in different ways, such as before different activities or at different times of the day. For example, I took one Energy Multiplier before an outdoor walk, a Hydration Multiplier before a Peloton ride, another before dinner and one in the middle of the work day.
I poured each stick into a cup of water, sometimes with ice and sometimes without. The first stick I used was actually the one with the tear in it (just a small puncture that likely occurred during shipping), which was the most clumping I experienced across all of the sticks I tried. I think this was largely due to being open, exposed to the air and potentially to moisture. There were only one or two instances of some lingering sediment at the bottom of the glass—otherwise, the powder easily stirred into water.
I really enjoyed most of the flavors, which were all pretty fruity (I liked Tangerine the best and Golden Cherry the least). Each stick made the color of the water slightly opaque or tinted depending on the flavor or color of the electrolyte powder. However, one outlier was the Energy Multiplier in the Lemon Ginger flavor. I enjoyed the taste of this one, but it made the water a dark green color—similar to that of matcha—which I found unappealing. While it didn’t stop me from drinking it, I think the dramatic coloring of certain sticks could be a deterrent for some.
While I didn’t experience much of a noticeable change as a direct result of the product, like an energy boost, I do think using a product like this motivated me to drink more water and to be more active. However, moving forward, I don’t plan to continue using the product because I’m working on losing weight, and the high amount of sugar and carbohydrates doesn’t fit into my diet plan.
