Meet the macchiato. This spunky little espresso beverage came onto the scene in Italy, supposedly to distinguish between various espresso drinks. The word means “marked” or “stained,” which is why the drink is marked by a dash of steamed milk on top.
Nowadays, a macchiato is more than just a distinguishing factor among drinks. As they’ve become more and more popular, it’s not uncommon to find them — particularly a caramel macchiato — on the menu of almost every coffee shop, including Starbucks. If you’re a fan of caramel and coffee, you’ll more than likely find this drink to be absolutely delicious.
Want to give it a try but don’t have the time to head to a coffee shop? No worries. You can make a caramel macchiato at home, and we’ve got just the coffeehouse-copycat recipe to help you do it. And the best part? You’ve probably got all these ingredients in your kitchen already, so making one of these coffee drinks at home will likely come with no extra expenses.
HOW TO MAKE A CARAMEL MACCHIATO AT HOME
YOU’LL NEED:
- 1/2 cup of brewed coffee or a shot of espresso
- 1/2 cup of steamed whole milk
- 3 tablespoons of caramel sauce
- Whipped cream
THE RECIPE:
Step 1:
First, you’ll want to pour the caramel sauce into the bottom of your glass and set it aside until you’ve completed the next step.

Step 2:
Brew your coffee! Traditionally, a caramel macchiato is made with a shot of espresso, but in case you’re not the biggest fan of the dark roasted, finely ground coffee, half a cup of your favorite drip coffee will do just fine. Pour the coffee or espresso into your glass of caramel.
Step 3:
Now, you’ll need to steam your whole milk and add it to the glass with your other ingredients. If your espresso machine has a built-in steaming wand, this step should be easy for you. But don’t fret if you don’t have a steaming wand on hand; there are other ways to get the job done.
Step 4:
Lastly, top your homemade caramel macchiato with a layer of fluffy whipped cream and add a drizzle of caramel sauce.
